When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away, which caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to be an attendant or cleaner to help them remain alive. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. After only two school years she left for an acting profession. The path she chose did not come without challenges. While in New York, her first task was to pose stills in crime magazines. the theatre work that she wanted eluded. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" lady at a club before she gave up and moved back to Boston. She was in Boston in which she was employed during the evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time as an usherette. She graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she was a drama student.
